Most AI search work dies in a spreadsheet. This playbook turns omissions into shipped PR/CMS fixes in one week.
Most AI search programs stall after the audit. You get a colorful share-of-voice chart, a CSV of misses, and a meeting that ends with "let's prioritize." Buyers never see a change. This playbook is for teams who want omissions closed this week — by shipping a PR or CMS draft, not by staring at another dashboard.
Why dashboards fail AI search work
AI search sits between the buyer and your site. Models synthesize short answers, then optionally cite a few sources. If you are not named in that answer, the click never happens — and in 2026, clicks are already scarce.
SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb clickstream data for January–April 2026 found 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click, up from 60.45% in 2024. (SparkToro)
Pew Research Center's study of 68,879 Google searches showed users clicked a traditional result 8% of the time when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when it did not. (Pew Research Center)
Even when you "rank," you may still be invisible in the answer layer. BrightEdge's Generative Parser research (February 2026) found that only about 17% of sources cited in AI Overviews also rank in the organic top 10, with AI Overviews appearing on roughly 48% of tracked queries in their commercial sets. (BrightEdge)
Dashboards are useful for seeing the gap. They fail when they become the deliverable. A mention score does not fix entity fog. A SoV chart does not resolve conflicting pricing pages. The operating system that works is miss → root cause → draft → ship → recheck.

The 5-day buyer playbook
One week. One owner. A fixed prompt set. Ship at least one production change by Friday. Expand only after the loop works.
Day 1 — Build a revenue prompt set
Do not start with vanity category queries. Start with the questions that decide a demo, RFP, or renewal.
- List 20–30 prompts across five intents: category ("best X for Y"), comparison ("X vs Z for [ICP]"), objection ("does X support SOC 2?"), pricing/packaging, and "best for [ICP / industry / size]."
- Tag each prompt with pipeline weight (high / medium / low) and the page or feature that should win.
- Freeze the wording. Changing prompts mid-week destroys your before/after signal.
- Cap the set. More than ~30 prompts in week one usually means you are collecting misses you cannot ship.
Day 2 — Multi-engine audit (same prompts, fixed cadence)
Run the Day 1 set across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity in the same session window. Answers drift; treat engines as separate channels.
Log four outcomes per prompt × engine:
- Cited — your URL or brand named with a usable citation
- Mentioned without citation — named in prose only
- Competitor named instead — someone else owns the recommendation
- Total omission — neither you nor a clear substitute for your category slot
Capture the exact claim the model made and the cited URLs. That claim is your fix brief. For measurement design and citation share-of-voice context, pair this day with Citation Share of Voice: The AI Search Metric That Matters and AI Search Tracking: How to Protect Your Brand in AI Answers.
Day 3 — Map each miss to one root cause
Force a single primary cause per miss. Multi-cause rows become unshippable.
If you cannot pick one cause in five minutes, the miss is underspecified — go back to the claim and cited URLs from Day 2.
Day 4 — Write the fix (draft, not a strategy deck)
Write the change that removes the Day 3 cause. Prefer the smallest diff.
Entity fog: One definitive sentence (what it is, who it is for, category). Apply it to title, intro, schema name/description, and the help-center alias table.
Answer gap: Open with the verdict buyers prompt for. Put evidence second and nuance third. Add a comparison or ICP table a model can lift without inventing numbers.
Corroboration: Publish a quotable FAQ with stable facts (ICP, packaging model, security posture). Brief partners/review sites with the same wording.
Conflict: Produce a three-column diff (marketing | docs | listings). Ship reconciliations; do not "note for later."
Access: Confirm known AI user-agents can fetch public money pages where policy allows; fix crawl errors before rewriting copy.
Hand the draft to whoever merges PRs or publishes CMS changes the same day. A perfect draft that waits until next sprint is still a dashboard.
Day 5 — Ship PR/CMS + recheck
- Merge or publish the Day 4 change to production URLs.
- Confirm the live page shows the new answer block, schema, or reconciled facts.
- Re-run the same Day 1 prompts on the same three engines.
- Record outcomes next to the baseline. Note direction (better / same / worse) — not a vanity percentage.
- File the next week's single highest-weight remaining miss.
Refresh timing varies by engine. Treat "days to a few weeks" as directional, not an SLA. Unknown for a guaranteed window.
Definition of done
Use this table as the exit criteria for the week. If a row fails, the playbook is incomplete — even if the dashboard looks busy.
FAQ
How is this different from a ranking sprint?
Ranking optimizes blue links. This playbook optimizes answer presence on prompts that create pipeline. BrightEdge's ~17% citation/top-10 overlap is the reason you cannot treat the two as the same contest. (BrightEdge)
Do we need all five days if we already have an audit?
No. Skip to Day 3 if your audit already has claims, cited URLs, and engine outcomes. Days 4–5 are non-negotiable — that is where most programs stall.
What if the miss is corroboration and we cannot earn a mention this week?
Ship the on-site source-of-truth first (FAQ + consistent facts). Start the external brief the same day. Do not wait for press to fix internal conflict or answer gaps you control.
Should we expand engines beyond three?
Not in week one. Stabilize the loop on Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. Add Gemini or Copilot only after you can ship weekly on the core set.
If your AI search work keeps dying in a spreadsheet, change the deliverable. Find the omission, name the root cause, write the fix, and ship a PR or CMS draft. That is what Attensira is built to do — close the gap, not decorate another dashboard.
